September 1 - New Jersey decriminalizes private consensual homosexual acts.

September 3 - Harry Hay, John Burnside, Don Kilhefner and Mitchell L. Walker hold the 'Spiritual Conference for Radical Fairies' gathering in Benson, Arizona, with over 75 men in attendance.  The success of the event leads the men to form Radical Faeries.

September 7 - ESPN launches and becomes the first cable TV channel to be 24-hours a day.  SportsCenter debuts.

September 9 - The 31st Primetime Emmy Awards were held.  Taxi (ABC) won best comedy series.  Lou Grant (CBS) won best drama series.  Carroll O'Connor (All in the Family) won best comedy actor, Ruth Gordon (Taxi) won best comedy actress, Ron Leibman (Kaz) won best drama actor and Mariette Hartley (Incredible Hulk) won best drama actress.

September 12 – Hurricane Frederic makes landfall on Alabama's gulf coast.  The hurricane killed 5 and caused $1.77 billion in damage.

September 12 - On the two-hour season four premiere of Charlie's Angels on ABC, Shelley Hack is introduced as new angel Tiffany Welles, replacing Sabrina Duncan played by Kate Jackson.
