July 5 - Hot Lead and Cold Feet movie premieres.  Although promotional material for this Western prominently featured Don Knotts, he was only fourth-billed and in a supporting role.

July 8 - 1978 Wimbledon Championships end.  Martina Navratilova won her first grand slam singles title at this event.  She defeated Chris Evert in the final, 2–6, 6–4, 7–5.

July 10 - The ABC Evening News gets a revamp and becomes ABC World News Tonight, employing a unique three-anchor setup (Frank Reynolds serving as lead anchor from Washington, Max Robinson presenting national news from Chicago, and Peter Jennings with international news from London).

July 14 - Foul Play, Hooper and The Swarm movies premiere.

July 18 – Claude P. Dettloff, photographer, dies. (born 1899)

June 4 - The 32nd Tony Awards is held.  Best Play award went to Da.  Best Musical award went to Ain't Misbehavin'.

June 6 – California voters approve Proposition 13, which slashes property taxes nearly 60%.

June 6 - 20/20 tv series debuts.

June 6 - Damien: Omen II movie premieres.  Jonathan Scott-Taylor revealed in an interview that his characterization of Damien was at least partly inspired by Brian De Palma's film Carrie.


June 10 – Affirmed becomes only the 11th horse to ever win the Triple Crown by defeating Alydar in the 110th running of the Belmont Stakes.

September 3 - Harry Hay, John Burnside, Don Kilhefner and Mitchell L. Walker hold the 'Spiritual Conference for Radical Fairies' gathering in Benson, Arizona, with over 75 men in attendance.  The success of the event leads the men to form Radical Faeries.

September 7 - ESPN launches and becomes the first cable TV channel to be 24-hours a day.  SportsCenter debuts.
