Get Up and Boogie, it's June 1976!

A number one hit on the Cash Box Top 100 list in June 1976 was 'Get Up and Boogie' by Silver Convention.

June 2 – A car bomb fatally injures Arizona Republic reporter Don Bolles.  The murder was linked to his coverage of the mafia.

June 2 - Breaking Point movie premieres.

June 3 - British parliamentarians came to the U.S. Capitol to present lawmakers with a one-year loan of the oldest known copy of the Magna Carta, one of only four that survive.  It was later displayed for public viewing in the Rotunda of the Capital.

June 4 - CBS broadcasts Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns. This triple-overtime contest has since been heralded as the greatest NBA game ever played.

June 5 – The Teton Dam collapses in southeast Idaho in the U.S., killing 11 people.

June 6 – J. Paul Getty, industrialist dies. (born 1892)

June 7 - After several years providing commentaries for the show, David Brinkley joins John Chancellor as co-anchor of NBC Nightly News.

June 13 – Severe thunderstorms pass through Iowa, spawning several tornadoes, including an F-5 tornado that destroys the town of Jordan.

June 14 - The Gong Show tv series premieres on NBC.

June 16 – Francis E. Meloy, Jr., the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Lebanon, is assassinated in Beirut.

June 17 – The National Basketball Association and the American Basketball Association agree on the ABA-NBA merger.

June 18 - Midway movie premieres.

June 20 – Hundreds of Western tourists are moved from Beirut and taken to safety in Syria by the U.S. military, following the murder of the U.S. ambassador to Lebanon.

June 26 - Bugsy Malone movie premieres.

May 11 – U.S. President Gerald Ford signs the Federal Election Campaign Act.

May 15 - City council of Los Angeles prohibits employment discrimination by the city based on sexual orientation.

May 15 - Hundreds march and smoke in Marijuana Day parade in New York.

May 17 - The 28th Primetime Emmy Awards were held.  Police Story (NBC) won best drama series.  Mary Tyler Moore Show (CBS) won best comedy series.  Jack Albertson (Chico and the Man) won comedy best actor, Mary Tyler Moore won comedy best actress, Peter Falk (Columbo) won drama best actor and Michael Learned (Waltons) won drama best actress.

May 19 - The Missouri Breaks movie premieres.

May 24 – Washington, D.C. Concorde service begins.

April 1976 - Conrail, Helter Skelter, 2 Dollar Bill

A number one hit on the Cash Box Top 100 list in April 1976 was 'Disco Lady' by Johnnie Taylor.

April 1 - Conrail (Consolidated Rails Corporation) is formed by the U.S. government, to take control of 13 major Northeast Class-1 railroads that had filed for bankruptcy protection. Conrail takes control at midnight, as a government-owned and operated railroad until 1986, when it is sold to the public.

April 1 - Apple Computer Company is formed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

April 1 – The Rocky Horror Picture Show is officially re-released as a midnight movie at the Waverly Theater in Greenwich Village in New York City.

April 1 - The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox movie is released.

April 1–2 Helter Skelter, a two-part adaptation of Vincent Bugliosi's book about the Charles Manson case, airs on CBS, with Steve Railsback portraying Manson.

April 24 - Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels makes an on-air offer to pay The Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were apparently watching the show together in New York City and considered walking down to the studio to accept the check. Michaels would raise his offer to $3,200 on SNL's May 22 episode.

April 30 - Muhammad Ali retains heavyweight title with 15-round, unanimous decision on points over Jimmy Young.

March 1976 - Patty Hearst, Kiss, Family

Dig it, Man, it's March 1976!

A number one hit on the Cash Box Top 100 list in March 1976 was 'Dream Weaver' by Gary Wright.

March 1 – Bradford Bishop allegedly murders five of his family members in Bethesda, Maryland. The crime goes undiscovered for 10 days and the suspect is never caught. In 2014, he is placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.

March 9 - Family tv show premieres on ABC.

March 9–11 – Two coal mine explosions claim 26 lives at the Blue Diamond Coal Co. Scotia Mine in Letcher County, Kentucky.

March 11 - Gable and Lombard, Robin and Marian movies are released.

March 12 - I Will, I Will... for Now movie released.

March 14 - Buzby Berkley (director/choreographer) dies.

March 16 - Harold Wilson announced his resignation as Prime Minister of Great Britain.  He had been Labour leader for 13 years and Prime Minister for nearly 8 years.

March 18 - The Man Who Fell to Earth movie released.  Filmed mostly in New Mexico, it starred David Bowie, who's stated he was using cocaine at the time.

March 20 – Patty Hearst is found guilty of armed robbery of a bank.

March 22 – Filming begins on George Lucas' Star Wars science fiction film. In one of the most lucrative business decisions in film history, Lucas declines his directing fee of $500,000 in exchange for complete ownership of merchandising and sequel rights.

March 26 - Ride a Wild Pony and Sky Riders movies released.

March 29 - At the 48th Academy Awards, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest wins best picture.  Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher win best actor and actress for their work in that movie.  George Burns wins best supporting actor for The Sunshine Boys.  Lee Grant wins best supporting actress for Shampoo.

March 31 – The New Jersey Supreme Court rules that persistent vegetative state patient in the Karen Ann Quinlan case can be disconnected from her ventilator. She remains comatose and dies in 1985.

March 31 - W.C. Fields and Me movie released.
